‘Erection problem’ is the most common sexual disorder that can be caused by using erectile dysfunction drug,’ a new study has shown.
The findings, from the Canadian Journal of Physiology, are presented today in the British Medical Journal, published online Feb. 4.
The Canadian researchers found that men taking Cialis and Viagra or a combination of these drugs experienced “very mild” erections, with no complaints of impotence or decreased sexual desire. The erectile dysfunction drug Cialis is also a phosphodiesterase inhibitor.
“We wanted to test whether it was a direct effect of these drugs or that they could also affect blood flow,” says lead author Dr. David H. Dolin, an endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dolin was the first to demonstrate that the drugs affected blood flow to the penis, which is why they were chosen for the study.
In the study, the researchers compared male volunteers, who consumed a daily dose of Cialis or Viagra for two weeks, to those who took a placebo, which was taken only on an empty stomach.
The researchers found that men who took the drug experienced “severe” erections, with no complaints of impotence or decreased sexual desire, with a significantly lower rate of sexual desire.
The findings were reported in the British Medical Journal.
“Although we were not able to establish a direct effect of the drug on blood flow, we did observe a reduction in the rate of blood flow to the penis,” says Dolin.
Dolin says that he was also surprised that Cialis had the same effect on blood flow to the penis as the other two drugs.
“We did not know if we could get blood flow to the penis from the drug or not, so we decided that it is worth trying out,” he says.
“The results show that when the drug is taken for two weeks, the amount of blood flow to the penis is reduced and it is no longer able to maintain that level of blood flow,” he says.
The findings were published online in the British Medical Journal.
The study was supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute on Aging, which supported the study.
“It’s important that the researchers do a better job of testing whether the drug actually caused the changes in blood flow that we’re seeing in men taking it,” says Dolin.
In the study, Dolin was the lead author on the article. He is a clinical associate professor of endocrinology and a senior author on the Canadian study.
“We were hoping to have a better idea of how the drugs affected blood flow, but we were not sure if it was a direct effect of the drug,” he says.
Dolin is also the lead author on a paper presented at a meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
“We are still not sure if the drugs affect blood flow to the penis,” he says.
The results were published online in the British Medical Journal.
The authors, who are all members of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, say that the drugs in the study were the same, which makes it difficult to draw conclusions.“In our study, the researchers saw a reduction in the amount of blood flow to the penis from the drug, which is why the drug was taken only on an empty stomach,” says Dr. Dolin. “Because we were not able to establish whether the drug caused the changes in blood flow to the penis, we decided to look for other ways to test the effects of the drug on blood flow.”
The authors are calling for further research to determine the relationship between the drugs and blood flow in men taking them, as well as their effects on other aspects of male sexual function.
“We need more research to fully understand the effects of these drugs,” Dolin says.
“We still need more research to understand how they cause erectile dysfunction and whether there are other possible explanations for it,” he adds.
The authors also warn that further research will be needed to determine the mechanisms by which the drugs could cause erectile dysfunction.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
If you are taking Cialis or other medications to enhance blood pressure, it is important to follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment for optimal results.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness. Here are the key drug-food Interactions to be aware of:
Cialis has been shown to cause some mild side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these do not go away within a few days. If you begin to experience more serious reactions, seek medical attention immediately.
Common side effects reported from Cialis use include:
More severe side effects include:
If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately. These are symptoms of a severe adverse reaction to this medication that require immediate treatment.
As with all prescription medications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you currently manage. Tell them about any and all medications, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with Cialis. Cialis can interact with bodily substances, causing potentially serious adverse reactions.
Specifically, you should inform your health care provider of any alpha-blocker, antifungal, HIV protease inhibitor, or high blood pressure medication you are taking. Remember to mention any herbal products you use, especially St. John’s wort.
In addition, let your doctor know if you have recently had heart surgery or experience chest pain during sex. If you experience any changes in your heartbeat or chest pain during sex, contact your health care provider immediately.

Taldalafil is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men, particularly those with impotence. It enhances blood flow to the penis, aiding in achieving and maintaining an erection. Erectile dysfunction can be a symptom of underlying health problems such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, leading to unsatisfying sexual performance.
